Free Tech Troubleshooting Checklist

Use this free checklist before you reset a device, replace a part, or pay for a repair. It is designed to help you troubleshoot common phone, tablet, app, Wi-Fi, charging, battery, storage and performance problems in a safe order.

1. Protect Your Data First

  • Back up important photos, documents, contacts and account information when possible.
  • Do not factory-reset a device until you have confirmed what will be erased.
  • Make sure you know the passwords or recovery methods for important accounts.

2. Check the Simple Causes

  • Restart the device.
  • Confirm power, charging cable, adapter and outlet connections.
  • Check whether the problem affects one app, one device, or everything on the network.
  • Look for obvious physical damage, moisture or excessive heat.

3. Check Storage, Updates and Apps

  • Make sure the device has enough free storage.
  • Install trusted operating-system and app updates.
  • If the problem started after installing an app, extension, cleaner, VPN or utility, consider removing it.
  • Avoid unknown cleaner apps, unofficial APK files and one-click repair tools from untrusted sources.

4. For Wi-Fi or Bluetooth Problems

  • Test another website or app.
  • Check whether other devices have the same network problem.
  • Restart the phone or tablet and router when appropriate.
  • Forget and reconnect to the network only if you know the password.

5. For Charging, Battery or Heat Problems

  • Use a compatible charger and cable from a trusted source.
  • Inspect the charging port for visible debris without using metal tools.
  • Stop charging or using a device if the battery is swollen, smoking, leaking, giving off a burning smell, or becoming dangerously hot.
  • Do not put an overheating device in a freezer, refrigerator or water.

6. Before a Reset or Repair

  • Write down the exact symptoms and when they started.
  • Record any error message.
  • Confirm your backup.
  • Check whether the device is still under warranty.
  • Use qualified repair help for battery damage, electrical faults, severe water damage, board-level repair, security incidents or important-data recovery.
